Online News & Updates
Ahead of the Facebook IPO Grab your Username

Grab Your Facebook UsernameYou may have noticed that Facebook is all over the news because it is selling it's shares to the public for the first time.

Hate it or love it Facebook is here to stay (as long as there's an internet anyway!).

In some quarters it is believed that Facebook personal profiles and 'fan' pages, which are normally used by businesses, organisations or personalities - are taking over the role of the traditional website.

While I know that this is completely wrong, because they play a very different role online, your Facebook page is very powerful and has very unique abilities to attract people due to 'social validation'.

Imagine that you receive a recommendation to watch a film in an anonymous email - you most probably will ignore it - BUT, if one of your 'Friends' are raving about a "Great film I have just seen" on their Facebook page you are MUCH more likely to take it seriously and possibly give it a chance.

All Businesses Must Have A Facebook Page Urgently

This is the big opportunity for businesses, all businesses need to be represented on this platform - let the public see what you have to offer, if they like it and are satisfied with your service levels - they will tell people about it!

On the web it is all about been found so people can take advantage of your product or service, this is why you need to secure a memorable "Username" - this is the part of the Facebook page address which follows http://www.facebook.com/YourUserNameHere/ - normally you will see a series of numbers & letters which is impossible to remember.

Why is a Penguin important to Google?

In case you haven’t heard the Google launched a new updated algorithm this week, it is called The Penguin update.

Google made it pretty clear that it’s about targeting those violating its quality guidelines. Here’s an exact quote from the announcement:

"In the next few days, we’re launching an important algorithm change targeted at webspam. The change will decrease rankings for sites that we believe are violating Google’s existing quality guidelines."

Luckily, Google lists exactly what the quality guidelines are. In other words, Google tells you exactly what not to do.

There are 8 “specific guidelines”. They are:

1. Avoid hidden text or hidden links.

2. Don’t use cloaking or sneaky redirects.

3. Don’t send automated queries to Google.

4. Don’t load pages with irrelevant keywords.

5. Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.

6. Don’t create pages with malicious behavior, such as phishing or installing viruses, trojans, or other badware.

7. Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

8. If your site participates in an affiliate program, make sure that your site adds value. Provide unique and relevant content that gives users a reason to visit your site first.

Beyond the specific guidelines, Google also lists 4 “basic principles”. These are:

1. Make pages primarily for users, not for search engines. Don’t deceive your users or present different content to search engines than you display to users, which is commonly referred to as “cloaking.”

2. Avoid tricks intended to improve search engine rankings. A good rule of thumb is whether you’d feel comfortable explaining what you’ve done to a website that competes with you. Another useful test is to ask, “Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn’t exist?”

3. Don’t participate in link schemes designed to increase your site’s ranking or PageRank. In particular, avoid links to web spammers or “bad neighborhoods” on the web, as your own ranking may be affected adversely by those links.

4. Don’t use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

Google provides plenty more guidelines and elaboration on the quality guidelines in its help center.

Online Retail

Online Retail is a form of electronic commerce whereby consumers directly buy goods or services from a seller over the Internet without an intermediary service.

An online shop, eshop, e-store, Internet shop, webshop, webstore, online store, or virtual store evokes the physical analogy of buying products or services at a bricks-and-mortar retailer or shopping centre. The process is called business-to-consumer (B2C) online shopping. When a business buys from another business it is called business-to-business (B2B) online shopping.

Customers

Online customers must have access to a computer and a method of payment. In general, higher levels of education, income, and occupation of the head of the household correspond to more favorable perceptions of non-store shopping. Also, increased exposure to technology increases the probability of developing favorable attitudes towards new shopping channels. In a December 2011 study Equation Research found that 87% of tablet users made an online transaction with their tablet device during the early holiday shopping season.

Logistics

Consumers find a product of interest by visiting the website of the retailer directly or by searching among alternative vendors using a shopping search engine. Once a particular product has been found on the web site of the seller, most online retailers use shopping cart software to allow the consumer to accumulate multiple items and to adjust quantities, like filling a physical shopping cart or basket in a conventional store. A "checkout" process follows (continuing the physical-store analogy) in which payment and delivery information is collected, if necessary. Some stores allow consumers to sign up for a permanent online account so that some or all of this information only needs to be entered once. The consumer often receives an e-mail confirmation once the transaction is complete. Less sophisticated stores may rely on consumers to phone or e-mail their orders (though credit card numbers are not accepted by e-mail, for security reasons).

Payment

Online shoppers commonly use a credit card to make payments, however some systems enable users to create accounts and pay by alternative means, such as:

Billing to mobile phones and landlines[4][5]
Cash on delivery (C.O.D., offered by very few online stores)
Cheque
Debit card
Direct debit in some countries
Electronic money of various types
Gift cards
Postal money order
Wire transfer/delivery on payment

Some sites will not accept international credit cards, some require both the purchaser's billing address and shipping address to be in the same country in which site does its business, and still other sites allow customers from anywhere to send gifts anywhere. The financial part of a transaction might be processed in real time (for example, letting the consumer know their credit card was declined before they log off), or might be done later as part of the fulfillment process.

Product delivery

Once a payment has been accepted the goods or services can be delivered in the following ways;

Downloading: This is the method often used for digital media products such as software, music, movies, or images.
Drop shipping: The order is passed to the manufacturer or third-party distributor, who ships the item directly to the consumer, bypassing the retailer's physical location to save time, money, and space.
In-store pickup: The customer orders online, finds a local store using locator software and picks the product up at the closest store. This is the method often used in the bricks and clicks business model.
Printing out, provision of a code for, or emailing of such items as admission tickets and scrip (e.g., gift certificates and coupons). The tickets, codes, or coupons may be redeemed at the appropriate physical or online premises and their content reviewed to verify their eligility (e.g., assurances that the right of admission or use is redeemed at the correct time and place, for the correct dollar amount, and for the correct number of uses).
Shipping: The product is shipped to the customer's address or that of a customer-designated third party.
Will call, COBO (in Care Of Box Office), or "at the door" pickup: The patron picks up pre-purchased tickets for an event, such as a play, sporting event, or concert, either just before the event or in advance. With the onset of the Internet and e-commerce sites, which allow customers to buy tickets online, the popularity of this service has increased.

Shopping cart systems

Simple systems allow the offline administration of products and categories. The shop is then generated as HTML files and graphics that can be uploaded to a webspace. These systems do not use an online database.
A high end solution can be bought or rented as a standalone program or as an addition to an enterprise resource planning program. It is usually installed on the company's own webserver and may integrate into the existing supply chain so that ordering, payment, delivery, accounting and warehousing can be automated to a large extent.
Other solutions allow the user to register and create an online shop on a portal that hosts multiple shops at the same time.
Open source shopping cart packages include advanced platforms such as Interchange, and off the shelf solutions as Avactis, Satchmo, osCommerce, Magento, Zen Cart, VirtueMart, Batavi and PrestaShop.
Commercial systems can also be tailored to one's needs so the shop does not have to be created from scratch. By using a pre-existing framework, software modules for various functionalities required by a web shop can be adapted and combined.

Google +1 Button - New Social Media Marketing?

Carl Henry Global - Google +1 Plus 1 ButtonGoogle launched the +1 button in March, which is now available in Google searches. +1 is targeted to work like Facebook’s Like button because these are personal 'votes' by real people, the results appear in the search results as friends recommendations.

Will the +1 button be what Google needs to succeed with social media?

Google began their social search theme with the introduction of Facebook pages and Twitter posts in search results pages, now Google is adding the weight of personal recommendations to its search rankings with the addition of the +1 button.

You need to have a "Google Profile" to use the +1 button, if you don’t already have a Profile, hit any +1 icon and then hit the Create profile and +1 button and proceed with creating your profile including a +1. Once your profile is set up and visible your friends will be able to find you by searching by your email address.

Your Google profile will also store all your +1′s in a new tab, which you can keep private as your own record of what you like around the web, or share with the world.

If you are connected to somebody by means of Gmail, Google Talk, Google Contacts, Google Reader and Google Buzz and they have recommended a site or page you may see their name and photo under the search results. If you hover over the person’s name with your mouse, it will tell you how you two are connected to each other.

Improve Your Search Engine Ranking

Carl Henry - On StageWebmasters and website owners can add the +1 button to their website pages or articles to encourage people to click them - Google will obviously be using this information to rank their SERPs (Search Engine Results Pages) so I advise you to look into this carefully if you need organic traffic to your eCommerce website.
