True networking is; a sustained effort to build up the number of people you know & who know you, it is not sufficient though to simply know people. You need to know what they do and how they can help you achieve your goals, this might be through moral support or introducing you to an investor you never know until you make the effort to open a new relationship.

 

You need to decide exactly what kind of people you need to meet, who you need to know. You must build a list of targets and ideas of how you can meet them. Start with your existing networks, you will already belong to one or more groups, never discount any relationship you have. Write down everyone you know, even family and people who are not in your area, work out how they link together and who they might know that could help you.

 

Talk to your existing contacts and tell them what you are doing or planning to do, ask them if they know anyone who can help you that they could introduce you to. Look into all the local events in your area, it doesn’t matter if it is a charity event or a local chamber of commerce lunch, every opportunity to get out and meet new people should be grasped.

 

When you are out and about make notes when you have met someone, you can write on the back of their card or take some paper or pad with you, when you are talking they will mention things you can use, other people they know, other events, things they like or do for a living. Make notes as soon as you can because by the next day you will probably forget most of what they said.

 

You will not find many deals sitting at home, you need to be out with people, make an effort to invite people for a coffee or something stronger, keep the atmosphere light and enjoyable, try to avoid only talking ‘shop’. People like to be with people that create a good atmosphere, if they think you are only inviting them out to get something from them they will not likely become a regular part of your network.

 

Above all keep accurate records of your network, keep this up to date each day, review the list of people regularly and keep in touch even if it is to (genuinely) ask if they are OK. Offer to do small favours if you are able to because this will avoid the possibility of coming over as a ‘user’. See networking as a daily essential part of your business role.
