WELCOME TO THE PRINCIPALITY

Small in size. Remarkable in character.

Monaco brings together centuries of history, Mediterranean life, striking architecture, international business and an unusually varied collection of neighbourhoods. From the historic streets of Monaco-Ville to the seafront at Larvotto, the best way to discover it is to explore its different personalities.

This guide introduces the essentials, with links to official resources for visitors who want to go further.

01 / THE ESSENTIALS

Monaco and Monte-Carlo explained

Monaco is an independent sovereign Principality on the Mediterranean coast. Monte-Carlo is one of its best-known districts, internationally associated with Casino Square, grand hotels and Belle Époque architecture. The two names are often used together, but they do not describe exactly the same place.

02 / GET ORIENTED

Neighbourhoods with distinct identities

Monaco-Ville sits on the Rock, overlooking the sea. La Condamine connects everyday commerce with Port Hercule. Monte-Carlo is known for its landmark buildings and elegant public spaces. Fontvieille, Larvotto and Mareterra show different sides of modern waterfront Monaco. Exploring by district reveals much more than a single panoramic view.

03 / THE STORY

History, traditions and institutions

Monaco's heritage is closely connected to the Grimaldi dynasty, the Prince's Palace and longstanding civic and cultural traditions. Historic buildings, ceremonies and religious sites provide a window into the Principality beyond its modern international image.

04 / PLACES TO SEE

Landmarks worth discovering

Begin with the streets and viewpoints of Monaco-Ville, then discover the atmosphere of Casino Square, the waterfront around Port Hercule and the changing character of the coast. Some places are best enjoyed on foot; others deserve time to explore their history, gardens or surrounding neighbourhood.

05 / THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT

Architecture across the centuries

Monaco's built environment combines historic façades, monumental civic buildings, celebrated hospitality architecture and contemporary developments shaped by limited land and dramatic terrain. Its contrasts make the Principality especially interesting to explore from street level, hillside viewpoints and the sea.

06 / FIND YOUR WAY

Maps, walks and new perspectives

Because Monaco rises steeply from the waterfront, distances on a map can be deceptive. Plan your route by neighbourhood and allow time for viewpoints, public spaces and unexpected discoveries. Interactive and 3D experiences can also help you understand the relationship between the coastline, buildings and hillside.
